Dyslexics helping Dyslexics
According to the International Dyslexia Association, “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”
Dyslexia Ottawa was created 26 February, 2016 by Philip Powel Smith, the owner of Meadowlark Tutorials in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was created as a result of hearing one too many stories of Dyslexic students experiencing a lack of support and proper educational instruction in their schools.
These students need a voice. As an adult dyslexic who has faced the same hurdles in school many years ago, I am compelled to help this generation.
Our logo is representing the thought: “What must we do to help these students?” The circle represents the collective focus of what has to happen. The word “DO” is circled in warmth and security and the the word is green for growth and prosperity. It was created on a note pad during a school meeting by simply writing “do” and circling it as I questioned what the teachers were willing and able to do. A simple thought, leading to action for a student, has become Dyslexia Ottawa.
